General Events

Tuesdays, 10:30am-11:30am: Yale School of Environment Spring 2025 Speaker Series: “Data-Driven Urban Forestry.” Experts will share their use of data to effectively resolve management problems and measure the efficacy of different solutions. [register here]

Thur. 3/6: Sketching in the Galleries, an evening of guided sketching at the Yale University Gallery [1111 Chapel St., 5:30-6:30pm]

Thur. 3/6: Weird Music Night, a unique event that offers a platform for musicians, artists and performers to connect with audiences through sound, art and experimentation. The event is curated by John O’Donnell, professor at UConn and member of the Ely Center for Contemporary Arts (ECOCA)’s Governing Board. [7pm, free]

Thur. 3/6: From Concept to Creation: Intro to Screen Printing. Explore the craft in an engaging, hands-on workshop that includes a live demonstration of screen creation, where you’ll learn how to prepare and set up designs. Then, you can try your hand at printing your own designs using pre-made screens. [770 Chapel St., 6-9pm, $87]

Sat. 3/22: Fantasy Gardens: Collaging Workshop. “Take a couple of hours doing something therapeutic and optimistic,” joining others in a safe happy place to chill, natter, and make, with tour and supplies guides Kristen Cassidy and Maxim Schmidt. Tue. 3/25: Tran & Queer Self-Defense Workshop: Learn the basics of self-defense in a safe and inclusive space. [6:30-8:30pm. 13+, free, limited space, RSVP required.

Thur. 3/27: Skip the Small Talk at East Rock Brewing: bring your friends, or come by yourself, and spend a Thursday night at an event “where you know everyone else is there for the same reason.” The event offers “big talk” conversational prompts and structures to “actually talk to people and that it’s not awkward.” [$19; check-in at 6:15pm, event 6:30-8:30pm; 285 Nicoll St., 21+]

Fri. 3/28: 2025 Connecticut Writing Workshop: a one-day, in-person “How to Get Published” writers conference. The event offers intense instruction over the course of one day, answers to questions, and the opportunity to pitch a literary agent or editor (optional). Sat. 3/29: Rhythm India: Bollywood & Beyond, a journey of dance and celebration at the Shubert Theatre. Experience the vibrant costumes, music and soulful rhythms of the “ghungroo” dancing bells. [247 College St., 7pm. $40-$85. Theatre doors open approx. 30 min. prior to start.]

Art Exhibitions

City Gallery: Whispering Forest & Other Conversations by Rita Hannafin, art quilt exhibit inspired by Susan Simard’s Finding the Mother Tree. [Exhibition March 23, 2-4pm.; Gallery Hours: Fri-Sun, 12-4pm; 994 State St.]

NXTHVN: All At Once, Reflected Through Glass, showcasing the artistic practice of glass as a medium of resistance. Art incubator NXTHVN hosts artists work that use the medium for critical and transformative storytelling, with artists’ work reflecting on social issues and inequities. [Gallery Hours: Wed-Sun, 2-6pm]

Ely Center for Contemporary Art: Tin There, Done That, featuring the traditional material for a 10th wedding anniversary (representing ECOCA’s marriage of fostering of contemporary arts in New Haven). The exhibit features the work of many contemporary artists as well as the group exhibition, “A Desire Path.” Opening Reception March 9, 1-3pm]

Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & In New Haven. A new exhibition to be installed at the Schwartzman Center illuminates ongoing research that recovery the essential role of Black people throughout history. The show will include nearly 100 images of Yale’s earliest Black students from the 1800s and early 1900s, many of whom had deep New Haven connections. March 31-April 26: The New Haven Paint & Clay Club’s 124th Juried Exhibit:. Reception takes place Sun., April 6 from 1-3pm. $4000 in prizes! ($30 entry fee for members, $45 for others).

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVITIES

  • Sunday, March 16: New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the largest, single-day spectator event in Connecticut, and the 6th oldest in the nation. The event starts at Ellsworth & Chapel at 1:30pm, heading down Chapel and turning on Church. The parade lasts at around 30 minutes, culminating at Church and Elm (ultimately, at Trinity).
  • Sun. 3/16: New Haven’s premier traditional Irish ensemble A Drop of the Pure plays at Cafe Nine following the parade. They’ll be performing two sets of traditional Irish folk and fight songs, while Paddy and crew serve up corned beef sandwiches, Guinness and heavy pours of whiskey! [3pm, $10, 21+].
  • Sun. 3/16: Parade Day at Three Sheets! The bar opens at 10am “until we aren’t” for “all of your pre-parade revelry,” with a special menu and plenty of fun. Local music starts at 4pm, ft. West Rockers, Problem With Kids Today, Qween Kong, Skavs, Kilkenny Ramblers.
